Jóhanna Ásgeirsdóttir will tell you about the limits of visual perception and how you can play with color in artistic contexts. Short intros on the physics of light, how our eyes work and the cognition of perception lead into practical exercises with color that underline the difference between what we see and what is really there.

Will be taught in English, questions and answers can be in English, Icelandic or German.

Applicable for adults and children accompanied by adults.

No need to bring anything.

Great to be there from start to finish if you want the full lectures and explanations of the exercises but you can also drop in if you just want to paint a little bit.

Create Your Own Comic! – Open Workshop (walk in whole day)

Myndarsögur

Storytelling in a new age requires us to look back, reflect and take a step into the unknown.  In order to portray and tackle the issues at hand we must gather all our resources and compound them to bring our knowledge and experience together.

Exploring deep emotions, tackling the topic of the century or just being your silly self and sharing that with others.  Here we offer the space to bring our collaborative narrative to life.

No prior experience is needed.  Open to all ages. Bring a story,  bring a style, bring a theme, bring a character.  Maybe you don’t have to do everything alone.  Let’s see your perspective.

Improv Try Out (2 hrs)

Tiny International Improvisational Theater

In this 2hr workshop you will be able to try how it is to do some improv games and understand better how to train your mind and body to play and connect with other adults.

The goal is to show people that have never tried it before how amazing it is to bring random ideas to life, play with your head and with others and feel the flow that we can do it together.

This will be led by TIIT – Tiny International Improvisational Theater. A Reykjavik-based collective of improvisers from all over the world with a few hafnar.hausers in it.

What this workshop is not about:

It is not about being funny, being extroverted or making anyone uncomfortable.

Building self-organization systems (1.5 hrs)

Gamithra Marga

Our brains get tired when we hold too much stuff in them. The more we can delegate holding information to our systems (about our goals, to-dos, or what we're going to eat today), the more we free up our attention to hang out in the present and follow up on random new ideas. This workshop is about exploring the things that take up too much of our mental RAM, and brainstorming systems that reliably hold information for us.

This workshop is for absolutely everyone who feels like their brain constantly has too many tabs open. We'll explore the types of systems we can create for ourselves, the common pitfalls and bottlenecks that sometimes make our systems work against us, and practical tools that we can use. We'll focus on identifying problems and brainstorming rather than building, so be prepared to write things down, but you'll still be okay without a laptop.

Taught by Gamithra, who has created many systems to manage and measure aspects of her life for many years, creating databases of mood logs, project trackers, and digital food inventories, and who greatly enjoys the feeling of systems working well.

Writing against perfectionism - an exercise with pen and paper (1 hrs)

Una Björk Kjerúlf

A short creative writing session (50-60 minutes1hr) with some writing exercises. You don't need to bring anything or know anything about writing. If you can write a grocery list or send online messages, this is for you. If you write on a regular basis and suffer from writers’ block or find your current writings not good enough, this is also for you. And if you're happy with your writing and simply want to share the experience of writing with others, you're equally welcome. You can write in whatever language you prefer. The goal is simple, to practise writing whether you have zero ideas or hundred, have fun doing it and see where it takes you.

English/Icelandic

Game/Play-design workshop (2 hrs)

Steingerður Lóa Gunnarsdóttir

What are some of the things you need to design games or playful experiences? What state of mind, resources or knowledge do you need to start? We'll talk about what is what in game design, and do exercises that will give you a lived sense of the fundamentals of game design.

Steingerður Lóa Gunnarsdóttir has been working as a game designer for the past decade. She has an MFA degree in Game Design from NYU, BA in Creative Writing and is a part of the arthouse Isle of Games collective.

The workshop is in English, aimed at adults, and a touch of playfulness in your heart is the only thing you need to bring. It will take around 2 hours.

  • We have all things and tools so no need to bring anything

  • We will have an open walk in - so it will take around 30-60min depending on how detailed you are

How to start designing a book – A guide for nerds (2 hrs)

Kakkalakki

A talk to understand what  you need to know before starting a book. We will discuss size, structure, types of books, different papers, binding, different ways of printing and all you need to know and how to organize before starting it.

This will be led by Kakkalakki – an award-winning design studio based in Reykjavík, formed by Fernanda Fajardo and João Linneu, focusing on creating unique art and photography books.

This 2hr nerdy talk is for anyone interested in making a book. Can be an art book up to a novel, we will talk about it from a design perspective, so it will be full of technical matters.

What this workshop is not about:

It’s not about how to write a book, how to have ideas, how to start a project.

This is a technical talk for when you already have an idea or a purpose for your book and want to know more about it.

Mechanical watches, horology workshop (2 hrs)

Tom Manoury

Mechanical watches are not just instruments for telling time; they are marvels of engineering and craftsmanship that remain relevant in a world cluttered with rapidly obsolescent electronics.

Tom will introduce the workshop with a brief history of time measurement and watchmaking, reflecting on the notion of time in correlation with society and technology.

He will then disassemble and reassemble a mechanical watch while explaining the various components and their functions. The process will be magnified on a big screen for better visibility.

Practical Workshop: Hands-On Experience

Want to try your hand at watchmaking? Basic tools and defective movements will be provided for you to work with, along with guidance to help you through the process.

For the practical workshop, you are welcome to bring your own:

  • Loupe or magnifying glass

  • Tools: small screwdrivers, tweezers, or any micro-mechanics, jewelry, or modeling-related tools

  • A watch: if you have a watch you’d like to work on or learn more about

  • Good mood: come ready to learn and have fun!

The workshop is open to everyone; kids (10+) are welcome when accompanied by an adult.+

Holding Safe Spaces in Group Work (2 hrs)

Jess LoMonaco

This class will be held by Jess LoMonaco, using techniques from the recently published website and toolkit www.storysharing.eu. In this project sponsored by Erasmus+, collaborators built a collection of exercises, advice and other tools to enhance the art of learning to share stories, whether it is on a personal, one-on-one scale or for performance on a stage.

This class is offered as a follow up to the workshops held earlier this year, addressing the issue of creating and maintaining safe spaces.

The class will be split into 2 parts: First, a deep dive into ideas for safe spaces in facilitating events, Second: Questions and open brainstorming for best practices.

No prior attendance at other story sharing workshops is required!

The class will be in English, but Icelandic can also be used, otherwise google translate can be our bridge! Open to all, but there is a chance of some triggering content being discussed. Come with an open mind, curiosity, and questions that we can work on together!
